Description
In War and Self-Defense I attempt to generate a dilemma for the just war theory by arguing that the right of national defense cannot be reduced to personal rights of self-defense, nor can it be explained through an analogy with them. (1) My conclusion is that the long-standing and deeply entrenched view that national defense is grounded in self-defense must be abandoned. Jeff McMahan, David Mapel, and Fernando Teson doubt this conclusion in different ways. McMahan and Mapel argue that the first horn of the dilemma is insufficiently sharp, whereas Teson challenges the second. I am very grateful to my four critics for their perceptive and insightful responses to my argument and for the many important points they raise. In the following remarks I will first suggest that these objections are not as opposed to my basic project as they may initially appear. This is because they are premised on a conception of national defense that differs substantially from mainstream just war theory. Second, I will explain why I remain unconvinced by their attempts to revive the reductive and analogical account of national defense. In my view, the central dilemma of War and Self-Defense remains.
